In A Mother Just Like You I came across this statement....what do you think?
"Family planning is the mother of abortion. A generation had to be indoctrinated in the ideal of planning children around personal convenience before abortion could become popular. We Christians raise an outcry against abortion today, and rightly so. But the reason we have to fight those battles today is because we lost them thirty years ago. Once couples began to look upon children as creatures of their own making, who they could plan into their lives as they chose or not, all reverence for human life was lost. Children as God's gift whom we humbly receive are one thing: children as articles of our own manufacturing are another. You can do anything you like with what you yourself have made."

I think it's an interesting point. I have a Catholic friend who believes this utterly and I can't say it's too hard to agree with, I just can't imagine not planning, I'm such a planner. And I don't want 1,000 children! But I think selfishness has definitely developed through birth control of any means.
(i posted a comment then reread the quote and decided that my first interpretation was wrong)
my thought is that family planning is not the mother of abortion. totally disagree.
yes, children are a gift. i will agree with that.
we have never used birth control and God has blessed us with 5 children we have held and 2 we have not.
the language used is very stout. abortion is a harsh word and used in the medical world in regards to a miscarriage (spontaneous abortion). i'm not sure if i agree or not but i do know that God has blessed our quiver and closed down shop all on His own without any help one way or another from us.
i would also say that God is bigger than our attempts at birth control.
hmmm...i am going to have to chew on this one a bit, laurie. thanks!
My husband and I have never used birth control either, and have been blessed with one beautiful son, however he is not biological. I have never concieved and do not know if I will ever. I agree completely with Mandy. God is much bigger than our attempts at birth control and He is also much much bigger than our attempts at concieving as well! In regards to this author I am not sure whether I agree completely with the statement, but I do believe that when we think that we are "controlling" anything we are mistaken!
this is an interesting statement and i can see where it is coming from, but i don't think i agree. i am a planner by nature and sometimes my desire to plan and control is a sin. but sometimes planning is just using common sense. if you consider this statement to be true about "planning" children then it would also be true about anything else that God gives us, which is essentially everything. i too agree that God is bigger than our attempt to control anything!
